PRESS RELEASE FROM OHANEZE NDI IGBO, UNIPORT CHAPTER
We the-Igwe-in-Council of Ohaneze ndi igbo uniport chapter regrets to annouce the killing of our son and brother, Peter Ofurum who hails from Ngokpala LGA Imo State.
Peter Ofurum, sir P as his friends call him was a conscious comrade, President of the Fcaulty of Management sciences, he was easy going and peaceful. Peter was shot twice by a member of the Nigerian Police force during the peaceful protest by Uniport students who were simply showing their displeasure with the new policy of "no school fees, no exam" applied by the school management as against the policy of NUC.
It's no news that Uniport pay more in the area of school fees but we didnt disagree with the authorities, all we asked for was that the management allow our students to write their exams, take off that deadline and open the portal so that those that have their own fees can pay but our V.C blatantly refused turning a Federal University into a private one. We the-Igwe-in-council are particularly concerned as it's on record that most of the deaths in uniport affect Igbo students. So, we ask, what have we done? is it a crime to leave our various states to school in uniport? The last time i checked, this was a federal institutio, but our students are being denied their citizenship and rights as students. Aluu 4 affected 2 igbo vibrants boys, last year Kelechi died (no bed space) this time it's Peter, to mention but a few that's still fresh in our memories. What have we done?
Professor Ndowa E.S Lale ha shown to the entire public how unfit he is to manage the school and the students that is committed into his hands. He has delibrately turned his back on the Nigerian students and has ordered the Nigerian army and police to continually harass our students, beat then up and arrest our leaders. The question is whta have we done to deserve such treatment, is it a crime to ask for our right? you increased school fees, we didnt complain, you added peculiar charges yet we paid, you gave us deadline to meet up, we couldn't but we begged for more time and you arrogantly refused.
We are aware that the govt pay our fees and we are suppose to pay non statutory fees of about 19,000 naira maximum just like other federal universities yet we pay 45,000 naira minimum without complains, what do you do with the extra money? our class rooms are bad, our hostels are decapitated, students learn at convocation arena, our learning environmenta are not conducive, we are being threatened in different ways. When you were a student, how many times did the school management shut the portal against you? did you even pay fees? It baffles me when men suddenly forget their past and act as if they are in anew planet.
If you wanted change, it's a gradual thing, you don't just wake up and make rigid decisions, a good leader will always listen to his subjects. You couldn't even address the Nigerian students, because we waited to hear from our V.C, you didn't send any of your officers to address us, not even the school PRO or the Dean of student affairs. So Mr VC how do you explain to Nigerian students that this was not a delibrate act. We are disappointed that it appears we are left alone in this walls, so our complains cannot be considered even by our supposed parents in the university.
We join forces with Nigerian students (NANS) to call on Human Right Organisations, Human right activists, civil organisations, Federal government, well meaning individuals and the international communities to treat this case with fairness, let justice prevail.
Igwe Ebube agu n'eche agu, Gburugburu XVIII of Ohaneze ndi igbo, Uniport.
